Defending Parental Rights and Defeating the Narratives

In Indian River County, a troubling trend has emerged: the voices of concerned parents seeking a stronger academic focus in our schools are being dismissed as radical or intolerant. Meanwhile, agendas that prioritize ideology over education are celebrated as progress. This isn’t just misguided—it’s a deliberate attempt to silence anyone who dares to advocate for parental rights and a return to genuine learning.
While our local schools may not be pushing the same agendas seen across the nation, the real issue lies in the fierce opposition faced by those who support a return to classical education—one that emphasizes critical thinking, history, and a well-rounded curriculum. Groups and school districts striving for this approach are too often met with hostility and mischaracterizations. It’s not radical to want our kids to excel academically without the distraction of political agendas; it’s responsible parenting.
Compared to surrounding counties in Florida, Indian River County has been fortunate to have a superintendent who is both highly esteemed and nationally recognized by education groups for leadership and commitment to high academic standards. While other districts are doubling down on ideological agendas, Indian River has shown a stronger focus on core academics and parental involvement. However, even with this advantage, the pushback against those who want to see an even greater emphasis on classical education and parental rights remains fierce.
Internationally, countries that outperform the United States in education prioritize rigorous academics and respect for parents’ roles in shaping their children’s learning. Nations like Singapore and Finland focus on fundamentals—math, science, history, and literacy—without the distractions of political agendas in the classroom. If we want our students to compete on a global scale, Indian River County must continue to resist the national trend and empower parents to advocate for a true education—one that prepares our children for the real world, not just for ideological conformity.
It’s time for parents and community members to push back against the ignorance and hate directed at groups like Moms For Liberty and others who champion parental rights. When comments on social media degrade and demonize these efforts, we cannot afford to remain silent. Calling out these attacks for what they are—attempts to silence and intimidate—is essential. Every instance of slander or misinformation must be met with facts and unwavering support for parents’ voices in education. If we allow this hate to spread unchecked, we are complicit in undermining the very foundation of our community and our children’s futures.
We need leaders in our schools who value true education over ideology and a community that holds them accountable. Anything less is a betrayal of our children’s future.
